Mormons believe the Book of Mormon is a companion volume of scripture to the Bible. The Book of Mormon is another witness of Jesus Christ and confirms truths found in the Holy Bible.

Mormons believe the Book of Mormon does not replace the Bible; rather, they are companion works of scripture that together teach about God and Jesus Christ. Both contain teachings as recorded by ancient prophets. Mormons believe a prophet is a special witness for Christ, testifying of His divinity and teaching His gospel and commandments to all mankind. Prophets receive revelations and directions from the Lord for our benefit. The written words of God’s prophets are called scriptures (see 2 Peter 1:20-21).

While the Bible details events in the eastern hemisphere, Book of Mormon events largely take place in the Americas.

The Book of Mormon recounts that Jesus visited the Americas after He was resurrected. He taught people and established a church there. In the Bible it says, “In the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established (see 2 Corinthians 13:1).” Just as the Bible and the Book of Mormon are two witnesses of Christ, these two civilizations together witness that Jesus is the Christ and Savior of all mankind.

Because of their belief in the Book of Mormon, members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have been nicknamed “Mormons.” The name Mormon is also the name of one of the major prophets within the book. In these prophetic writings, everyone who reads The Book of Mormon is invited to pray and ask God if it is true. If the person asks God of its truthfulness and has a sincere desire to receive an answer, Moroni promises that God will confirm its truthfulness (see Moroni 10:3-5).

The Bible and Book or Mormon are similar in that they both contain God's word to us as recorded by prophets. The main difference is that the Bible was written by prophets living in and around the Middle East, near present day Jerusalem. The Book of Mormon was written by prophets living in the Americas during roughly the same time period. They are complementary books that both testify of Christ and support one another.

The Book of Mormon is a record of the ancient inhabitants of the Americas while the Bible is a record of the Jews in Jerusalem. God loves all of his children so he called prophets in Jerusalem as well as in the Americas to lead and direct his children down the path of righteousness. The Book of Mormon doesn't in any way replace the Bible, but is another witness that Jesus is the Christ. Just like when we received the New Testament, the Old Testament didn't lose it's truth or its validity. It strengthened the gospel of Jesus Christ. This is what the Book of Mormon does, it supports the Bible and doesn't take anything away, it strengthens it.

The Book of Mormon is another testament of Jesus Christ, just like the Bible testifies of Christ. The Bible was written by prophets that God called anciently in the Old World near Jerusalem. They received revelation from God and recorded His words so that all men could read and study them. But we know that other people were living in other parts of the world, far away from these prophets and the Bible. Because God loves all His children, He called other prophets in the New World during the same time the Bible was being written.

Where did the book come from?

Wherebookcomefrom_alternate

Just as the Bible was written by inspired prophets and followers of Jesus Christ (e.g., Moses, Isaiah, Matthew, John), the contents of the Book of Mormon were written by men who were disciples of Jesus Christ. These inspired men recorded Christ's teachings and commandments as given in the Western Hemisphere. Around 400 A.D., their writings were compiled into a single volume written on metal plates by a prophet named Mormon. Because of his contribution, the book is referred to as the Book of Mormon.
